Louis XIV (1643-1715)
Regence (1715-1723)
It was under the ambitious monarch Louis XIV, that French art first assumed its role of authority - a vital position maintained to the present day. Louis XIV wisely placed art industries under direct patronage of the crown, causing Lebrun (art director of the realm) to become dictator of style. During this Golden Age, Louis built Versailles, purchased the famous tapestry looms of the Gobelins and Beauvais, founded conservatories, libraries, academies, and made the Court of France the most magnificent in all of Europe.
The furniture in Louis XIV style is appropriately grand. Referred to as "Baroque", it is massive and symmetrical; carved, guilded, silvered; decorated with marquetry, elaborately inlaid with metals and tortoise shell.
